This flash is far too faint for your eyes to see. ![]() That rare interaction may generate a tiny flash of light or leave some free electrical charge. But occasionally, very rarely, like once every ten-million trillion times, a neutrino will strike one of the atoms that make up a water molecule. Most of these mysterious particles move right through without making a sound or leaving a trace. If you place a glass of water on a table, a trillion neutrinos will pass through every second. Neutrinos rarely interact with ordinary matter, so they are very hard to detect. Neutrinos may even help us understand what was going on when our universe first formed nearly 14 billion years ago! How to Catch a Ghostlike Particle But because neutrinos carry information about what is happening inside the hearts of stars and galaxies, scientists want to know a lot more about them. In that way, they seem a bit like ghosts-there, and yet invisible. They stream from the sun and outer space and pass right through ordinary matter-even our own bodies and Earth itself-without us ever knowing. No matter what their source, neutrinos are completely harmless because they do not stick together or interact with much of anything. Credit: Tiffany Bowman, Brookhaven National Laboratory. Understanding the behavior of neutrinos may help reveal important secrets of the universe.Figure 1 - Decay of a radioactive atom, potassium-40-which is found in bananas and has 40 protons (p) and neutrons (n) in its nucleus-into calcium-40, plus an electron (e –) and a neutral “ghostlike” messenger particle called a neutrino (Greek letter: ν, pronounced “nu”).But far more neutrinos come from the nuclear reactions in the sun than from any other source. Minerals in rocks and even potassium in bananas decay to produce neutrinos (see Figure 1). Such radioactive decay happens all around us. They are emitted when unstable atomic nuclei decay. Neutrinos are very light particles with no electric charge. When scientists decode the messages, they learn about the connection between neutrinos and the makeup and history of the stars, galaxies, and the universe. These giant detectors are helping scientists to pick up the “messages” that these ghostlike particles carry. The matter that makes up Earth helps shield out signals from other particles, so that the signals of neutrinos’ rare interactions stand a chance of being detected. To “see” neutrinos, scientists build really big, sensitive detectors, often deep underground. But unlike the sunlight we see and feel on our faces, these ghostlike particles do not often interact with ordinary materials. Trillions of them pass through us every second without leaving a trace! They mostly come from the nuclear reactions that power our sun. ![]() Neutrinos are tiny, subatomic particles that seem almost like ghosts. The Rave move of the first game, which sped up your fighters moves and made it harder for an opponent to get a punch in, has been removed. The game also moves at a speedier clip, so combos and morph moves occur in the blink of an eye. Special moves look snappier, the combos are slicker, and the backgrounds are eye-catching without being distracting. It's more of a combination of Windows 7 and Windows 8 that goes to the old, familiar Windows 7 desktop while putting the metro apps on the start menu, making it look a bit gaudy. You can download the Media Creation Tool directly from Microsoft (Relevant links are below depending on Version). I will keep Windows 10 only because it's a newer OS and because MS gives it to us free, but IMO, it's not really an improvement over windows 7. The interface is not real impressive, and MS still maintains their obsession with shoving these apps in our face, but now on the start menu, when most of us would rather do without them. Intel I have no experience with, but it's likely MS wrote adequate drivers for their graphics processors too. Nvidia, forget it until they write proper drivers for them. If you have an AMD graphics processor, you will have no problems during installation. Luckily, there is a way in Control Panel of Windows 10 to revert back to Windows 7, and I did exercise that option at that time. I tried to find graphics driver updates at both the Microsoft website and the Nvidia website with no success. When I checked what display driver was installed on this machine, it said "Microsoft Basic Display Driver," and I knew this was going to be a problem. One Nvidia machine installed the OS, but the available resolutions were unacceptable. The AMD machines went smoothly, but none of the Nvidia machines would take Windows 10. They had either AMD graphics or Nvidia graphics. I tried installing Windows 10 on several computers. The look and interface were good but that's all. My PC isn't brand new but enough that everything is supported and beyond so no excuses MS, you did a bad job on this OS, hope a major 10-2 update happens to make it usable and I may reconsider. Well even 8 allowed me to use some things like a keyboard and headphones, and that's not saying much. ![]() That said, back to Windows 7 I went and was extremely disappointed, was hoping for the next great OS I would be using, instead I feel like it was a torn down 8 with a different start menu. There were numerous driver issues aside from stated, numerous other issues aside from stated, just no room to type it all in here. If I test something I need it to boot directly to desktop, no darn password. I had major graphic issues AMD, getting that to work, Mail synchronization was horrid, would not allow me logon to pc without password (I'm the only one using it, I don't want a password) nothing to steal off my pc either. My Razor gaming headphones kept disconnecting and would not get sound (stop, unplug, plug back in) only way to get them to work. In the case of the series of candy spills by Félix González-Torres, each work comprised a pile of wrapped sweets left on the floor, from which viewers are encouraged to eat pieces. What are the implications of decaying or replaced material for the commercial value of such works, and for its collectors? It has become common practice for conceptual works of art to come with a certificate of authenticity issued by the artist or their estate, which is proof that the work of art belongs to someone and, perhaps even more importantly, can be sold legitimately to someone else. While the appearance of a work may not be wholly changed by the replacement of a component, as in Pistoletto’s Venus, the commercial value of a work may well fluctuate. And yet the effect of the work remains consistent. Each time a version of the work has been exhibited, it has appeared differently because of the placement and replacement of these rags. The placement of the rags is entirely random and impossible to replicate from display to display. ![]() His Venus of the Rags (1967, 1974), a version of which can be found in the collection of the Tate Modern, comprises a sculpture of Venus, who faces into a pile of “rags”, or old clothes. But for some, it also became a statement against the commerciality of the art world.Īn artist whose work well represents the Arte Povera movement is Michelangelo Pistoletto. Their reasons were both practical and a matter of principle: the artists had limited access to traditional supplies. The Arte Povera movement was composed of Italian artists who made art from anything they could get their hands on, including living creatures, vegetables, and live energy sources. The most recent incarnations can, in part, be traced back to the decade after the end of the Second World War. Making art from materials that will change, decay, or be replaced is not a new trend. Museums and private collectors have been compelled to stockpile these bulbs, creating an unintentional (and unexpected) demand for a product that is otherwise obsolete. Today, however, a major issue regarding these desirable and expensive pieces concerns the availability of the replacement bulbs themselves and their discontinuation by the mass market. At the time, Flavin himself observed that when electricity becomes redundant, his objects will cease to function. The need for the constant replacement of these bulbs seems to have been viewed initially by purchasers as a non-issue, or even as a novelty. The art for which Dan Flavin is most famous are installations of tubular, multi-coloured fluorescent light bulbs, which were both mass-produced and commercially available. ![]() ❖ Union Square Wines Union Square Manhattan Find Ben to see what amazing wine he’s stumbled on to lately.
